F-Road Eligibility Checker

F-roads (mountain roads) close seasonally, may require river crossings, and are almost always off-limits to 2WD rentals. This tool checks all three.

Why this matters

F-roads (mountain roads) are unpaved, often have unbridged river crossings, and can be closed by snow well into July. Driving one in a forbidden car — typically anything without proper 4WD and the rental company's explicit permission — voids your entire insurance policy, and the car hire company bills you for recovery (a tow out of a river can cost ISK 250,000+).

Road authorities open most F-roads from late June through early September. Even then, a single storm can close them for days. Check road.is the morning of your drive — "open" status changes hourly.

River crossing reality check

The rivers on F-roads are glacial meltwater — they're silty, cold (1–4°C), and can rise without warning. Glance at the water level: if it's flowing over the road surface, stop. If you can't see the bottom, walk the crossing first. Carry a wooden wedge and a tow rope. Tourists die here every year; search and rescue is volunteer-run and slow.

FAQ

My AWD rental looks like a 4WD — is it?

Often no. "AWD" crossovers (Duster, Vitara) lack the low-range gearbox and ground clearance for serious F-roads. Many rental contracts explicitly exclude them. Read your contract, don't trust the booking page description.

What happens if I drive an F-road illegally?

Insurance is voided. The rental company bills you for vehicle recovery (often ISK 200,000+), any damage, and a contractual penalty. If you're injured, your travel insurance may also refuse to pay. It's not a grey area — it's in the contract you signed.

Are there any F-roads a small car can do?

A handful of dry-weather F-roads (parts of F35 in late July, low-elevation segments) are passable in 2WD when conditions are perfect. Treat these as exceptions — they can re-classify as 4WD-only after one rainstorm. F-roads aren't for "let's see what happens".
